Happy Belated 4th!

Happy belated 4th of July! I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. We actually had a totally lazy day aside from our morning workouts and our traditional fourth of July walk across one of the bridges. This year we walked over the Manhattan bridge, and while it is far less crowded than the Brooklyn bridge the train traffic makes it really loud!

I've been trying to get back into the swing of things since we returned from Portugal, its always tough to get back on a Sunday night and head into work the next morning! But I am getting myself organized and the first post from our trip will be up tomorrow morning.

You may have also noticed a slight change as Wearing Pearls is now Boerum Place! Same blog, same type of content, just a refresh to the name. Its something I've been thinking about for quite a while, and one night the new name just came to me and here we are!

A Virtual Escape

I don't know about you, but its been one of those weeks where I could definitely use a little mental escape. Ten minutes spent day-dreaming about warm days, blue water and just a change of pace. I love the 'go-go-go' that consumes much of life, but there is something to be said for just slowing down and letting the mind wander.

Happy Friday and Have a Great Weekend!

Pop of Pink

(Outtake Caption: "Hurry up, its freezing!!)

Valentine's Day is an anniversary of sorts for me in two ways. One, seven years ago today I met M. We didn't start dating or even really get to know each other for several months after, but we were introduced by a mutual acquaintance at a Valentine's Day party. Now, the date really doesn't matter, and in the grand scheme of things its not an anniversary that we celebrate, but it does make me smile.

The other reason today is an anniversary? One year ago today, I interviewed for and received an offer for my current job. It was an opportunity that came out of nowhere, but came at exactly the right time. Of course, the opportunity wasn't without its unknowns and potential downsides, but I am so glad I decided to take the chance and pursue it!

Wishing everyone a great Valentine's Day!

Friday // Friday

Whew - what a whirlwind week! Quick rewind to last Friday. It started a totally normal Friday but ended up being one of those amazing, "pinch me" days. I {totally unexpectedly} received a promotion at work, which left me giddy and grinning from ear-to-ear. To top it all off we were headed to Boston to visit some friends for the long weekend. It was an all around couple of completely fantastic days until Sunday afternoon when I had an accident and ended up hurting myself. It's taken about 5 days but I finally (knock on wood) feel back to normal. To say it was a rough week would be an understatement, but I am SO thankful I am feeling myself again. This weekend I'm looking forward to continue taking it easy and starting to get things back to normal a bit!

A couple of things from around the web this week:

Have you seen the latest Quarterly Box from travel guru Hitha? This one is all about packing your toiletries smarter, which is something I definitely struggle with!!

The Newsroom. So I may be a bit late to the game on this one but we started watching it last weekend and got through the first season after I was out-of-action and pretty much relegated to the couch. The writing is super smart and while some of the characters are a bit slow to develop I love many of the dynamics between them. Bring on Season 2!

This blush blouse. I'm always on the hunt for long sleeves anything. My office dress code is very conservative and its somehow always freezing, so sleeves are a must year round. I love the blush color and two great ways to style it.

I want this for dinner right now... or lunch tomorrow! Healthy and quick and easy for busy work nights = perfect!

Have a great weekend!

New Year: New Look

Over the weekend I decided to give Wearing Pearls a bit of a makeover. Coincidentally its approaching the three year mark for this little blog, so I felt some TLC was in order. I hope you like the new design and layout, I'm pretty excited about it! As always, I love hearing from you, so if there is anything you would like to see more or less of, please let me know.

Wow, this week absolutely flew by! It felt so good to kick 2015 off with productive week at work. So many big projects to tackle this year, but I'm thankful for the current dose of extra motivation as I dive in.

This weekend I've got some fun workouts on the calendar, (its been way too cold this week get motivated for anything beyond the bare minimum), date night, and taking down the rest of our holiday decorations (sniff).

What are you up to?

Catching Up

Its been so long since I posted I almost don't know where to begin!

But to start... M and I got married the weekend before Thanksgiving at the Carlyle hotel in New York City. We had an intimate ceremony and reception with our families and close friends which suited us perfectly. We are so thankful for everyone who traveled to be with us, it truly meant so much to us to be surrounded by loved ones on this special occasion.

Our amazing photographer Emilia Jane captured the day perfectly. More of her photos from the day can be seen here

Now that the wedding craziness has passed, I'm hoping to get back to posting more regularly, starting with some photos of our trip to South Africa!

Wedding Inspiration

Well consistency certainly hasn't been my strong suit when it comes to blogging these past few weeks months!

We are somehow about four months out from our wedding (when did that happen?!) and suddenly our 'lets be relaxed' approach is coming back to haunt us! Our major stumbling blocks right now are the photographer and officiant. With regards to the photographer we are having a hard time finding one who we genuinely like their work and fits with our budget. We did another round of research this weekend and found what look like some good options, so hopefully things are coming together. The officiant is another tricky one, we've done tons of research but haven't found the perfect candidate yet. Any recommendations welcome!

Above is a bit of a mini-inspiration board for what I am hoping for in terms of look and feel - a bit of New York City glamour with lots of white and a dash of mixed metallics. Flowers and invitations are done and I love them both. I'll be sure to do a round-up of the vendors we used when all is said and done. My outfit is still a bit of a work in progress. I have most of the pieces but I'm still not quite sure how it will all come together, but I'm sure it will! I've also started to explore hair and makeup options which is completely overwhelming! But we booked our plane tickets for our honeymoon this past week and the excitement is definitely setting in.

Changes

To anyone who is still reading this blog, a big, big thank you! I realize I have been very bad with posting with all that has been going on recently, and now that I have somewhat emerged to see the light at the end of the tunnel, I thought it was time for a brief update.

About two months ago an opportunity arose and after a lot of thought I decided to pursue it.  I ultimately accepted a position with my old company as a temporary consultant, and I am very excited to say that this week I was made a permanent employee! I took the role not knowing if it would be possible to join the team permanently and I am so, so glad that it has all worked out. Making the change was a bit of a leap of faith, and as someone who likes a degree of certainty it was challenging. With that said, while taking a step back (or a step sideways) is not normally the most obvious or easiest choice in many career paths, I do now recognize that sometimes it can be the right one.

While I am going back to longer hours, (and dressier fashion!) I really, really like my team and the work, so it all balances out. I am still trying to figure out how to manage blogging as well, and I will likely have to scale back even as I get into a better routine with my new position. So, please bear with me as I figure it out, I really do appreciate your support and readership!

     xo,
       Dana

A Very Different Weekend // PSA

When I wrote my Friday post, I was so excited for a jam packed weekend, but plans aren't always meant to work out perfectly and sometimes its even for the best when they don't. [This post is not in any way meant to be a pity party, rather more of a PSA.]

The abridged version is that Friday morning at work I had a very random, freak accident that involved a puncture wound to my foot. Yes, this happened inside and I was wearing shoes (boots), and yes, my foot should be fine. But the moral of the story here is, please, please remember to get your tetanus booster shots every 10 years. I had to call around to all the primary care doctors I've seen in the past 10 years to try and get the record. Turns out my last was in 2003, so Friday after work I made a beeline for an urgent care clinic where they took a look at my foot, gave me a tetanus booster and some really strong antibiotics, all of which I am very grateful for. The downside to this is that the combination of the effects of the tetanus, my sore foot and the antibiotics which have a raft of not so great side effects made me useless for most of Saturday and I still had to take it pretty easy today. So, three lessons here: one, don't step on things, it hurts, two, get your tetanus shots, and three, sometimes doing nothing is just what the doctor ordered and really, really good for you!

Weekend Reflections

This weekend I've been in California with my family celebrating the amazing life of my grandfather who recently passed away. Saturday was an absolutely beautiful, sunny winter day, and it felt very fitting to celebrate my grandfather on such a perfect day.

San Francisco is a long way for a two night trip from New York, but I am so grateful that I was able to make the trip, and that M was was able to come with me. We were able to squeeze in some all too rare time all together as a family as my brother flew in for the weekend as well.

We are now waiting at the airport for our flight back to JFK and as always, I somehow can't believe that it is all over. While I don't have a burning desire to permanently move back to California, it is where I grew up and where my family is, and a part of me will always miss it just a little bit. So, until next time...

TGIF

TGIF. That's really all I have to say about this week. I knew it was going to be a rough one, but I will be so happy when its time to call it quits for the week!

As you might have noticed, total job craziness has translated to a pretty sparse week here on the blog. I definitely should have prepared better as I knew what was in store this week at work. But sometimes things just don't work out the way you would hope. It hasn't helped that the weather has been nuts as well! Between snow and freezing rain last weekend and the sub-freezing temperatures this week, shooting an outfit posts has been anything by appealing.

Basically, what I am trying to say, is that I can't wait for the weekend so I can try and get my non-work life back in order!

Though I finally did just take out our Christmas tree, so I guess thats a step in the right direction!

How was your week? Crazy? Cold? What are you excited for this weekend? Share, I feel so disconnected from the blogging/internet sphere...

2013 // 2014

2013 was certainly a year. M and I were reflecting back on the year on New Year's Eve, and without too much discussion we settled on unpredictable as the unofficial theme of 2013. I don't normally like absolutes, but I think its safe to say that 2013 was easily one of the hardest and simultaneously best years.

I like to think I grew, or at least learned a lot, from this crazy, challenging, roller-coaster of a year. And no, I didn't handle every situation with as much grace as I would like to hope I will be able to in the future. But I did my best, and I managed to get through the toughest bits and come out the other side no worse for the wear. Despite the challenges, there were so many wonderful moments this year. The highlight reel: M and I got engaged, we took some awesome trips, I started a new job, I was able to see my family (though never as much as I would like) and made some awesome new friends. As well as as dozens and dozens of wonderful, everyday moments.

Looking forward there are a few things I definitely want to do/accomplish in 2014. Resolutions are a bit too black and white to me, but I love having a few big goals/themes for the year.

Love (get married!!) | Save | Travel | Health | Family

I am very excited for all the adventures I know are in store for this year. Thank you for reading and for your support and I hope you continue to follow along!

Happy Friday

Its been a strange week in lots of ways and to be totally honest I don't really have any of that typical Friday excitement right now. Unfortunately, at the last minute, my mom wasn't able to make the trip to NYC this week due to a family emergency. I didn't realize quite how much I was looking forward to her visit, until she couldn't come, and now the weekend ahead seems a bit blank and empty as all the fun plans we had made fell to the side. While I normally really enjoy and relish days to myself, (and have plenty of things I need to do this weekend) this time of year I always really love spending time with my family and right now I wish I could be with them even more. I contemplated making a last minute trip to California this weekend, but decided to wait for now. I am however, excited for the forecasted snowfall in the city this weekend and plan to bundle up and go photograph the wintery city. What are your plans for the weekend?

Some favorites from this week:

A great round-up of yummy hot drink recipes. Perfect for this frigid weather most of the country has has this week.

Too funny - A French cafe charging extra for rudeness!

As I am sure I have mentioned several times before, I have been completely obsessed with full, midi length skirts this season.  More outfit love from this week: here and here. And thanks to Caitlin for introducing me to this awesome brand

Love these silly ideas on how to improve carry-on luggage. Personally, I would love to have a suitcase with a coffee holder!

Engagement Party

As always, I wish I had more (and better!) pictures. I snapped a few right before our guests started arriving and then my camera lay forgotten on the entry table the rest of the evening. Though I'm a bit sad I didn't get any pictures during the actual party, I'm glad I enjoyed the evening and didn't stress about taking pictures.

I am planning another post on some recent additions to our apartment, (we finally finished our bar cart!), but all other party details are below.

Outfit:
Dress: JCrew | Earrings: JCrew (sold out, similar) | Polka Dot Tights: Spanx
Nails: Essie Russian Roulette | Shoes: Bally (old, similar) | Hair: Inspiration

Recent Snaps

Packing for an upcoming trip.
Things left to do before Saturday - too many to count!

A little craft project to remember last weekend. Frame available here.

A fun DIY night hosted by Olivia. We made necklaces based on this tutorial from Glitter 'N Glue.
I love how mine turned out! See how I wore it here.

A few months ago I managed to loose several Bobbi Brown lipsticks - don't ask, I have no idea how.
I tried several drugstore brands as replacements, however, drugstore lipsticks (or at least the brands I tried) were not for me. The formulas were messy and bled and I didn't love any of the colors. So a few weeks ago when I nabbed a Gilt City deal for a coupon to Bobbi Brown and I took it as an opportunity to grab a few new colors.

We're Engaged!

I think its safe to say that when I mentioned I was excited for some fun plans this weekend, I really had no idea what was in store! Saturday afternoon M proposed (and I said yes!), and it was honestly one of the happiest moments of my life. We have both been smiling so hard ever since. I am so excited to spend my life with this absolutely amazing man.

Life Lately

The past few days have been a bit of a whirlwind - in the best possible way! As I alluded to in Friday's post, I just got a new job and I am so, so excited about it. Friday night M took me out to celebrate. We started at Frankie's Spuntino 457, which definitely did not disappoint. The weather was perfect to sit in the back garden, and though it got too dark to take good pictures as it got later, the food was amazing. We decided to enjoy the weather and walk home from dinner, making a stop the Clover Club for a nightcap.

Saturday we ended up getting trapped in a Starbucks during a rain shower and as you can see, we used the time very productively. I'll spare you the rest of our lovely photo shoot!

Amazing city views from our Sunday walk.

Fall essentials: new socks and belts from Target.

Last night I went to an awesome blogger Wine & Cheese night hosted by the lovely Olivia. I met so many awesome ladies and had such a great time sipping on wine and chatting about all things fall fashion and blogging.

My pictures don't really do it justice at all, but Olivia's new apartment is so cute and well styled. Check out her recap for more fun photos!

The Next Step...

Apologies for the sporadic posts these past few weeks, but 'life' has completely consumed me. Walking away from something that has played a major role in your life can be difficult (very, very difficult), but I do believe that I made the right decision and I am incredibly excited to take this chance to explore other opportunities. Now is not the time to dwell on the would haves, should haves and could haves, rather, I am focusing my energies on discovering the next step.

Also, a huge congratulations to my beautiful friend Lindsay and her new husband Matt on their wedding this past weekend. Thank you so much for inviting us to your big day, it was truly a beautiful occasion. Though I do wish I had better pictures of it!
