Summer Rompers

Rompers were once exclusively reserved for the ten and under set, but in the past few years these easy pieces have thankfully made a resurgence for the slightly more mature among us. Though they can still skew to the younger end of the spectrum there are plenty that feature a slightly subdued pattern and more conservative cut, like this one which is fairly drapey and has long sleeves. The one I'm wearing here is from last season, but I've linked a couple of other good ones that are still available below. Paired with a sharp pair of summer loafers and a bright lip its an easy and fuss-free ensemble for a warm evening.

Wardrobe Essentials: Blue & White Stripes

Does it get any more classic for summer than a good blue & white stripe? Doubtful in my opinion!

While the classics will certainly never go out of style, the trends this season for different shapes (off the shoulder, one shoulder, cut outs, bows, ruffles, ties, draping and more!) provide a great opportunity to remix an old favorite. A few of my top picks below!

Wardrobe Essentials: Summer 2017

I am going to argue that there are only three items you need to add to your wardrobe this summer. Three items that when paired with other things you probably already have in your closet will take you from beach to barbecue to rooftop drinks and just about everywhere in between.

The Slip Dress
In my opinion this is the hot ticket item of the season. Not 'new' by any stretch of the imagination but they haven't been this on-trend in quite a few seasons and if you still happen to have one hidden away in the recesses of your closet now is definitely the time to pull it out and put it to use. If not, I'd invest in a basic cut and neutral color. You don't need to spend a fortune to find something nice. Styling this can seem a bit daunting, but paired with your favorite jacket, tossed over a t-shirt or button up or even with a slouchy summer sweater over top, there are plenty of easy-to-wear outfits based around the slip dress.

The Heeled Mules
These were popular last summer as well, but the ones this season are slightly updated - more interesting colors and cuts. The cross over front is especially popular. Pair these with your slip dress and a denim or leather jacket for an evening out, with culottes or skinny jeans for days and even with cutoffs at the beach. I'd treat these as more or less one-season wonders. Buy a pair that looks nice and is comfortable but that you wont be too torn up about if they are ready to give up the ghost come Labor Day.

Statement Earrings
For all my love of statement earrings they are an accessory I am terrible at! That said, I am committed to finding a pair I love this season and wearing them on (semi) casual Fridays at the office, on date night and heck why not to the grocery store. There are so many super cool, affordable options that you should probably go ahead and treat yourself to two pairs, just in case!

Wardrobe Essentials: The Leopard Coat

There's nothing quite like a great statement coat to offset the blacks and grays that seem to dominate wardrobes this time of year. Don't get me wrong, I love wearing monochromatic looks, but sometimes you just need a punch of drama and a leopard print coat will do just that! While definitely a statement piece, a leopard coat can easily be dressed up for evening for a super glam look or dressed down with black denim and a cozy sweater during the day. I've been hunting for the perfect leopard coat for a couple of seasons now and this one is looking like it might just fir the bill. Some other great (and pretty affordable!) options below.

Wardrobe Essentials: Camel Coat

Camel coats, camel coats under $300, inexpensive camel coats, camel overcoat for women

A camel coat is one of those investment pieces that you'll wear for years, but that doesn't mean you need to spend a fortune to find one that has a classic cut and is well made! After scouring the internet for one for myself I've rounded up a couple of favorites (all under $300!) that hit the mark.

Lace-Up Knits

Lace-up sweater, block heeled pumps, boyfriend jeans

I have to admit I wasn't a huge fan of the lace-up trend initially. Something about it just seemed too young for my style. But as the weather turned cooler I started noticing really cozy looking sweaters that incorporated this trendy detail and after tying a few on I was sold. Paired with slouchy jeans and some uber-comfortable low, block heeled pumps, you've got a on-trend weekend look that remains easy to wear.  I love this one I'm wearing from JOA, but I also rounded up a bunch of picks under $100 below.

Late Summer Whites

Summer white dress
A few weeks ago, as a surprise for M's birthday I made plans to head to Rooftop Reds, the first commercial rooftop vineyard in New York. I made the mistake of not checking their website before leaving home and when we got up to the roof we were sad to find it closed due to the hot weather. However, the lack of people made it a great spot for a couple of pictures, before we all but melted and headed back to the safety of our air-conditioned apartment! We're planning to head back and check it out again once the weather has cooled a bit.

Packing for: Italy & Germany

Packing for Italy and Germany

I never managed to put the suitcase away from the last trip and its time to pack up again! Just the way I like it. We're heading to Germany and Northern Italy next week for some family activities and a bit of exploring and relaxing. Our trip is going to take us between city and country so I want to pack a mix of items that will work for both, and of course, its carryon only - so everything has to work double duty. I'm sticking mostly blues and whites with a couple of pops of orange to liven things up a bit. I rounded up some of the items I've currently got pulled out for consideration below.

Packing for: California

We're heading out to California later this week for a short vacation and I am so excited! We're going to spend a few days in the Monterey/Carmel/Pebble Beach area then head up to Napa for a bit of wine tasting and cap it off with an afternoon in the city and lunch with a friend. The weather can be a bit unpredictable during the summer along that part of the coast, but inland by Napa it will be warmer, so I'm planning to pack pieces that can play double duty. White jeans, a striped dress, sandals and a cozy sweater are musts. I am also planning to pack some sneakers and athletic gear (these are my current favorites and on sale!) for a couple of hikes we've got planned and hopefully a few rounds of tennis.

This weekend was definitely a hot one in NYC! We spent most of it inside with the AC on working on some projects around our apartment - we're slowly but surely making progress! But we did head out for a bit of shopping and something to eat late Saturday afternoon. If you're in the area there are some fantastic interior design and home goods shops along Atlantic Ave. Everything I am wearing here is from past seasons, but breezy summer stripes and a versatile khaki shirt are classics that you can wear season after season.

Wardrobe Essentials: Off the Shoulder

off the shoulder tops and dresses trend

The off the shoulder trend has exploded this summer, and I can't say I hate it. Its a fun way to show a little skin, and explore some new shapes, while still looking polished. I've picked up a few pieces for my summer wardrobe (outfits coming soon!) but in the mean time, here are a few more options to drool over! I've been loving what MLM has done lately, and their off the shoulder tops and dresses are no exception, perfect for super warm temps!

Wardrobe Essentials: Summer Prints

One look at my closet will tell you I'm not a big prints person, but I absolutely love it when I see a good one and am on a mission to incorporate a few pieces I truly love into my wardrobe. As it is finally summer (!) I've rounded up a few printed pieces perfect for the season.

On The Wall

Top // Jeans // Sunglasses // Shoes // Bag
M and I were out for dinner in Alphabet City, not a neighborhood we venture to all that often, and I saw this fun mural that was just begging for some photos. It kind of reminds me of a creepy, under-the-sea Cookie Monster. Or not... Either way, it was a fun reminder to get out and explore more in this great city we get to call home. There's always something to be discovered!
