Skin Care Routine

Sadly, I am not one of those people blessed with effortless skin, mine is temperamental and in constant need of attention. Sigh. But, after years of experimenting with different brands and products I've found a few that deserve gold star status. If any of this sounds familiar to you, hopefully some of these may work for you as well!

{The Routine}
In the morning, post workout, I cleanse with Skin Cuticles LHA Cleansing Gel, followed with Biologique Recherché P50 and Embryolisse Lait-Creme.

In the evening, I use the Eve Lom Cleanser or Kate Sommerville ExfoliKate, again followed with Biologique Recherché P50. Then a few nights a week I layer on Sunday Riley Good Genes and either Skin Ceuticals Triple Lipid Restore or Estee Lauder Revitalizing Supreme depending on what I have open. Or, if I'm feeling super dry, I will use a few drops of Sunday Riley Juno. No, I don't think it smells amazing, but it does do a fantastic job moisturizing. I'm also fanatical about using eye cream, I rotate between Kate Sommerville Line Release and Verso Super Eye Serum. Usually one night a week I do a mask, during the summer I'm really enjoying the First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Mask.

{The Products}
{Cleanse}
Skin Cuticles LHA Cleansing Gel | Eve Lom Cleanser (use with these) | Kate Sommerville ExfoliKate | Clinique Take the Day Off

{Mask}
Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask | First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Mask

{Tone}
Biologique Recherche P50 (I order mine from here)

{Treat}
Sunday Riley Good Genes

{Eyes}
Kate Sommerville Line Release | Verso Super Eye Serum

{Moisturize}

Summer Beauty Trends

I'm the first to admit I am not adventurous when it comes to makeup, it just isn't really practical given my lifestyle (read: uber professional for work). That said, there are a couple of makeup trends that have caught my eye this spring/summer and I may just work up the confidence to give them a try!

one // colored eyeliner
This is one to be approached with caution as I think most of us have memories of the strong pastels that dominated the makeup scene in the 80's and 90's. That said, a fresh face with a pop of blue eyeliner is a modern twist and perfect for warmer days. I would give this or this eyeliner a try and be sure to keep the rest of your face fairly neutral.

two // colored mascara
I don't think this will every fly for work (or at least where I work) but I am really excited to give this one try this summer. A punchy blue mascara with a simple white-t and denim shorts would be really fresh for summer. I think I'm going to give this one a try, it wont break the bank and the colors look awesome, it comes in a blue and purple.

three // defined brows
I don't think a strong brow is ever not in style, but some new products on the market are making it easier than ever to groom your brows with one swipe. Give the much anticipated Boy Brow a try.

What makeup trends are you looking to try out?

Aventures in Korean Sheet Masks

Adventures in Korean Sheet Masks
Korean skincare, though definitely not new, is having a moment in the international beauty scene. I've read numerous articles about the innovative products and fantastic results. In particular, sheet masks have been popping up everywhere. Once not the easiest to find, now beauty stores like Sephora have a fairly good selection.

On our way home from Hong Kong we had a stop in Seoul and I was determined to pick up some skincare goodies at duty free during our time in the Incheon airport. I should have done some research beforehand as the first pass through duty free was nothing short of overwhelming. In addition to the major international skincare and cosmetics brands that we're pretty familiar with, there were probably two or three dozen other brands for sale that I'd never heard of before.

After trying to get my bearings and chatting with some of the sales girls, I walked out with three packages of masks - two different types of facemasks and one package of the infamous foot peeling mask. So far, I've loved both the face masks, they haven't irritated my super sensitive skin and have been wonderfully moisturizing. As predicted, the peeling foot mask isn't the prettiest thing to witness, but it is very effective - and oddly satisfying. Overall, I highly recommend snagging a couple of sheet masks to try next time you're wandering around Sephora. Put on some comfy clothes, get your TV show of choice queued up and have a little spa night at home for a fraction of the cost of a regular facial. Also, if you find them at a good price or can buy in bulk, I'd stock up as they also make great gifts!

Best Red Lipsticks

best red lipsticks

4. Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Hollywood
5. NARS Lipstick in Heat Wave
6. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Mysterious Red

I LOVE red lipstick, and the punch it adds to even the most simple of outfits, but it can definitely be tricky to find a shade and formula that you like. There are so many shades out there, some of them awesome and some not so much. Here (clockwise from top left) I've rounded up six of my favorite red lip products.

Do you like red lipstick? What is your favorite brand/color?

Skin Favorites

Earlier this year when I was in the middle of wedding planning I finally realized it was time to get serious about my skincare. I've never had terrible skin, but I've always had my fair share of acne and breakouts and now, the inevitable smile lines are beginning to show (not that I regret a single one of them, quite the opposite), but I'd still like to do my best to take care of my skin. So I started by finding a dermatologist and making a visit, (my first since high school!).

After a thorough skin check, and thankfully nothing out of the ordinary, I left with a couple of prescriptions and a new skin care routine. That routine shifted a bit based on subsequent visits and as my skin adjusted to the new products that were recommended, but I now have a routine that is working really well for my skin at last. In addition to the above products I also use a prescription face wash, a topical acne treatment as needed and a Retin-A a couple of days a week. It may seem like a lot of products and fairly involved, but for the first time in as long as I can remember, I feel comfortable enough with my skin to forgo makeup on the weekends for the most part.

What products make up your skincare routine?

Recent Snaps

Packing for an upcoming trip.
Things left to do before Saturday - too many to count!

A little craft project to remember last weekend. Frame available here.

A fun DIY night hosted by Olivia. We made necklaces based on this tutorial from Glitter 'N Glue.
 I love how mine turned out! See how I wore it here.

A few months ago I managed to loose several Bobbi Brown lipsticks - don't ask, I have no idea how.
I tried several drugstore brands as replacements, however, drugstore lipsticks (or at least the brands I tried) were not for me. The formulas were messy and bled and I didn't love any of the colors. So a few weeks ago when I nabbed a Gilt City deal for a coupon to Bobbi Brown and I took it as an opportunity to grab a few new colors.

Hair Health

A few weeks ago, I was blow drying my hair one morning as usual, and when I finished I happened to look down at the floor, which was covered in a rather large (read: alarming) amount of hair. Granted, stress is just about my middle name right now, but having to Swiffer the bathroom floor daily is not exactly comforting.

Later that same day I read this post on some supplements that can often help with hair health and growth.  Normally I waffle back and forth on these kind of things, is this really going to help, is it worth the cost etc. But not this time. After work I immediately marched myself into Whole Foods and bought two types of supplements to help with hair growth and strength. I picked up some Biotin as well as a Hair, Skin and Nails formula similar to this one.
I also think I need to invest in some sort of heat protector to help protect my hair and keep it from getting so dried out from styling. Together with a good diet and a little less stress, I am hoping that these measures will help my hair be a little stronger and less prone to falling out!

What do you do to keep your hair healthy? Do you have a good heat protector to recommend?

Gilt City Finds

I found these two deals today and had to share! I have been thinking about getting a bkr bottle (Gilt deal here) ever since I saw Sierra's post on them. I was hesitating a bit over the price, but now I am so excited to order mine! The voucher for St. Tropez sunless tan products (Gilt deal here) was also too good to pass up. I have a trip to Italy coming up in a few weeks and lets just say that I am beyond pale. I've heard nothing but good things about this brand and their sunless tanners so I thought it was a good chance to try them out.

Sometimes purchasing things on your phone is just a little too easy!

I have no affiliation with Gilt, other than thinking its a very cool company and loving many of their product collaborations and deals.

Do you ever shop on your phone?

The Sock Bun

On the weekends I am a fan of keeping things simple and only styling my hair when necessary.   I wash and dry my hair every day during the week, so taking a break on Saturday or Sunday not only saves precious weekend time, but also gives my hair a chance to recover from constant heat and styling. Unfortunately, I don't have the type of hair that looks great (or even descent) the second day after blow drying, so I am always trying to find new ways to make my hair look presentable on the weekend. Here is one of my favorite ways to style second day hair.

The Sock Bun

I have tried just about every brand of dry shampoo over the years, and this formula from Batiste is by far my favorite.

What is your favorite way to style your hair when you don't wash and dry it?

Winter Survival

I am not one to complain about winter, in fact, I actually rather enjoy it. However, the cold weather does necessitate some slight changes in routine. Here are some of my favorites for getting through the cold months.

I have tried dozens of moisturizers over the years and never found one I really loved. I originally grabbed this Trader Joe's Coconut Body Butter for M as he has super sensitive skin and his dermatologist suggested he try it. Unfortunately, he is not a fan of coconut and the scent of this was too much for him. The smell doesn't bother me (it fades very quickly) and this is by far the best moisturizer I have used. It keeps my skin soft even after a few showers and I have started slathering it on every few days.

We also purchased one of these to help out with the dry air/dry skin/sore throat situation and it has been helping tremendously.

I love to take baths in the winter to warm up, and I have found that a few drops of scented oil helps my skin from drying out too much and (bonus!) it smells great too. One of my favorites is this Jo Malone bath oil I received as a stocking stuffer, but I also love this essential oil from Whole Foods.

Leg warmers are another one of my favorite ways to beat the cold. My mom gave me a few pairs she got in Italy as a Christmas gift, but I love these as well. They come in lots of fun colors and are nice and long. I wear them over my workout capris when going to Crossfit and around the house.

How do you deal with the cold weather?

Gift Idea #2

So I admit that this gift idea might be a bit self-centered, primarily because it is what I got myself for Christmas. I think this is extremely practical and useful, but something that your best friend, mom, sister etc. wouldn't necessarily go out and buy for herself. Which makes it an even better gift in my opinion.

The Clarisonic Mia 2 features all of the wonderful skin cleansing benefits of the other Clarisonic devices, but also has two speeds, as well as a handy timer feature to let you know when to switch areas of your face.

I ordered mine through Amazon and it arrived earlier this week. I didn't have a chance to open the box until Thursday morning and the brush requires 24 hours of charging before use, so Friday morning was the first time I used it. I was on the fence for a long time about ordering one, thinking it really wouldn't do that good of a job, but my skin feels so incredibly clean and soft already! I am really hoping that using this will help even out some dry spots and patches of uneven texture.

Do you have a Clarisonic? Do you like it? What is your skin care regime?

Crushed Plum

A few weeks ago I somehow lost my two favorite lip colors which I was carrying in my purse. I am still hoping they show up in another purse or a desk drawer or something but I have just about given up hope. Though unfortunate, this finally forced me to start searching for a fall lipstick. I normally find lipstick shopping right up there with jeans shopping, though much messier. However, when you finally find the right shade it is definitely worth it! This season I have been loving all of the dark wine colored lips I have been seeing and I wanted to find a shade that worked for me.

I finally went with Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Color in Crushed Plum and Bobbi Brown Shimmer Lip Gloss in Kir Sugar. I am definitely not normally one for anything shimmery on the lips, but this is very subtle and goes very well over the deep matte lipstick and is also very pretty when worn alone.

Makeup Review: Estee Lauder

This is a bit of a long story but I'll try and get to the point. When I was in San Francisco, the last day we spent with my parents and then in the early afternoon they had to drive home and we weren't flying out till the evening. So they dropped us off downtown before heading to the freeway. Well,  when we pulled over at a red light and as I climbed across and out of the backseat, I lost one of my earrings. When I realized a few minutes later, I jokingly told M we had to go Tiffany's  (which was right across the street) get a new pair. Obviously, that didn't fly, but as we had a few hours I was determined to find a new pair. So I tried Nordstrom (where they were originally from) but they didn't have any I liked, so we headed to Bloomingdale's, where I not only found the exact same pair, but was told by the salesperson that the Cupcakes and Cashmere book signing was taking place that afternoon.

Since we had a few hours till we were meeting M's friends I decided to get in line and see if I could get through. The only flaw in this plan was the fact that I didn't have the book. It's been in my Amazon cart for months but I just hadn't bought it yet. However, Estee Lauder was running a promotion that if you bought some of their products you could get a book with your purchase. A very kind sales lady brought me a tray of Estee Lauder products to look at while I waited in line, and without really putting too much thought into it, I decided on the Sumptuous Extreme Mascara and Pure Color High Gloss Lip gloss.

I have never purchased Estee Lauder products before, so I decided I should do a review as this was new territory for me. First off, the mascara is very good, it definitely magnifies and lengthens as the product description says it will. However, I find the brush to be entirely too big to get the corners of my eyelashes, and the brush does have a tendency to pick up too much product and make my lashes clump together. Would I buy it again? Probably not, but it is a step up from my usual Maybelline. The lip gloss is a pretty though rather generic color (the sales lady picked it for me) but I really don't like sticky, sweet tasting glosses, and this is definitely one of those. I don't love the application of it, I prefer brush applicators rather than squeeze tubes as I find them easier to control, but it does last fairly well. I don't think I would purchase this again either, but it is always fun to try new things!

Polished

I think we all know I am a big fan of manicures. After years of hating my chewed nails and raggedy cuticles, I finally started getting my nails done fairly regularly in an effort to make my hands more presentable. I have found there is no better motivator to stop picking at that cuticle or gnawing on that hangnail than a pretty new manicure. Having manicured nails makes me feel much more confident at work, plus its a fun and easy way to add a bit of color into my daily life. I find I always feel just a bit more put-together and polished when I have a manicure. Don't believe me? Check out what Lady Gaga has to say on the subject in her piece Six Reasons Why You Should [Get a Manicure]. I'm not sure I completely agree with all of her reasons (or her favored talon shape), but she definitely has a strong take on the subject.

Anyway, now that we've established the importance of manicures, lets talk about the most important part… the colors! Now that fall is upon us, it feels like a good time to transition to that fall wardrobe and color pallet, and this of course includes polish colors. Here are some of my favorites.

Weekend Visitor

I feel like I say this every weekend, but this weekend went by entirely too fast! M's mom was here visiting and we had an agenda full of good (indulgent) eats, exploring the city and some shopping.

I was seriously impressed with my hair-doing skills on Saturday night when we got a bit dressed up to try a new-to-us restaurant David Burke Kitchen. Unfortunately my nice bouncy, soft hair deflated and frizzed the second I stepped outside, but it was fun to have well-behaved hair for at least a nanosecond.

I ordered something totally decadent for dinner, the lobster salad, which came with quinoa, endive and beet carpaccio. It was a bit too rich for my tastes but completely delicious and the presentation was unbelievable.

IMG 7510

After two days of (too much) good food and drinks, it was definitely a little tough to get up for CrossFit this morning. But with some grumbles and groans we got ourselves to the 10am class for this workout.

Tabata Something Else
Complete 32 intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by ten seconds of rest where the first 8 intervals are pull-ups, the second 8 are push-ups, the third 8 intervals are sit-ups, and finally, the last 8 intervals are squats. There is no rest between exercises.

I don't remember my reps for each exercise but I ended up with a total score of 254. I really don't know if that is 'good' or not, but I worked hard and I'm happy with my workout. We warmed up and cooled down with a quarter mile jog and on the cool down lap my legs were shaking like crazy after all those squats.

After the gym we headed to TJs to get some much needed groceries. I felt like a terrible girlfriend because we hadn't gone to the grocery store in over two weeks and there was literally nothing to eat at home all last week. Food situation fixed.

IMG 7514

When we got home I headed down to the apartment gym for some elliptical action (damage control from the weekend eats) and more importantly to get my fill of the Olympics as they are now officially over. Tear. I had never watched rhythmic gymnastics before, but I was completely intrigued and I am a new fan. They made it look so easy, but I am sure it requires so much focus and precision to execute flawlessly. I would also love to know what leg workout those girls do. The commentator said they train for up to 8 hours a day which probably explains it, but man, wouldn't it be nice if there was a easy secret to getting those legs!?

IMG 7521

Mid afternoon snack was my favorite summer concoction: Frozen berries, cut up peach (optional), unsweetened vanilla almond milk and some almonds (optional). There are many variations to this but I am completely addicted to frozen berries in milk.

IMG 7524

After plowing through the laundry pile and catching up on some chores I put together dinner. Quinoa, sautéed kale and spinach, carrots and tomatoes, TJs pre-cooked salmon topped with lime juice, tahini and Siracha. Great combo.

IMG 7528

Now it is time to fold this mountain of clean laundry before I collapse into bed. Anyone want to come help?

Bangs Theory

I am in desperate need of a haircut and per usual, I am seriously contemplating getting bangs. I had this debate with myself before my last haircut, and needless to say, I chickened out. I have three main things that I am worried about. One, they will look terrible. Two, they will be a pain to maintain. Three, having hair in my face when I workout and all day will drive me nuts. Are these 'fears' valid, or am I way over thinking this? Help!

Wearing

After work last night, in the midst of an incredibly dramatic series of thunderstorms I braved my way to go outside and get my nails done. I have finally  found a place relatively near my office to replace the nail place I loved near my old apartment. It is a definite step up from the typical NYC hole-in-the-wall nail place, and only a few dollars more than average. Win! The only downside? I think every female that works downtown has also discovered that this place is awesome, making the usual wait time a bit off-putting. Last night however, I was in luck and most people wisely headed straight home after work rather than battling the torrential rains to go get their nails done. Smart move everyone. I however, trudged over there, and arrived looking rather like a drowned rat.

I only wish I looked half this chic in the middle of a rainstorm!

Anyway, I left in significantly a better mood than when I arrived, and with much prettier nails too!
